Lens-Artists Challenge #76 – On Display

This week’s photo challenge is “On Display” from Amy at the World is a Book. Since it is the holiday season, I focused on the display of Christmas in New York City. Check out Amy’s page for other creative interpretations! Amy, Tina, Ann-Christine, and Patti are the best!

As mentioned in a previous post, Christmas is my favorite time of the year. The lights of the tree and all the kitschy decorations, finding the perfect gift for a loved one, taking an amazing trip somewhere, or staying home for a few weeks – all fill me up!

This year, I was fortunate to spend a week in New York City – it was glorious. NYC is sooo much fun this time of the year. Midtown Manhattan is where most of the magical Christmas lights, window displays etc. exist. With this in mind, it means you are literally going to be tit to elbow with 1 million of your closest friends at any given time. I feel sorry for the residents of this part of town…it must be slightly annoying.

Here’s the thing, Midtown isn’t my preference at Christmas as huge crowds make me nuts. UGH. So, I spent just enough time (literally 10 minutes) in this area to snap a few pictures and run away as fast as I could. I missed out on a ton of window displays and other sparkling decorations, but I think I’m good with that – I have seen it all before.

The only thing that is sort of a bummer, is that I am watching CBS Sunday and I find that Nordstrom opened a new store in the area…..the kicker is they have a bar in the shoe department. I am pretty sure my girlfriends and I would have had a blast with that. Oh well, there is always next time.

Ok – here goes with my submission for the Challenge!

The icon of Christmas – The Tree at Rockefeller Center! I do absolutely love this soo very much. The trip would not be complete without braving the crowds to see this.

A couple of snaps running away from Midtown…..The Rockettes show is one of the best – we didn’t see it this time, but I have before. It is definitely a wonderful show – I was skeptical the first time around.

We stayed down south in Tribeca…..One day I went exploring and came across a really nice shopping center called the Brookfield Place in the World Financial Center – across the street from the World Trade Center. They had a really cool luminary display with hundreds of lanterns that changed colors throughout the day.

And lastly, my friends and I spent some time tracking down some of the best Christmas bars in the City. I swear it was just like a treasure hunt. We explored the Lower East Side, the Meatpacking District and the West Village. I think we found some goodies and had a blast toasting to a great year ahead!

All in all, NYC did not disappoint with the Christmas displays in all kinds of creative ways.

  3. That sounds smart to get a snippet of a visit and then go hunt and explore – even tho you missed the bar opp!
    One year when we were there – it was when Aeropostale opened the store – by chance we were walking up and I grabbed my hubs and two boys and pulled them in line – later – once we got in the store (and free t-shirts because we were among the first so many hundreds – my hubs said he did not even realize we were in line for the grand opening ((he just thought we were getting the kids hoodies cos that store was really in at the time))
    Anyhow – festive take on display and last comment – the DC holiday tree is nada compared to Rockefeller one

    1. That would have been lovely to see you. I had not been to the Brookfield before, but thought it was great. The Oculus right across the street is amazing too (if you have not been there). Have a GREAT TIME!! Merry Christmas!!

  8. I live an hour outside NYC and also love Christmas. Your wonderful pictures capture it well! One thing I also enjoy doing (because I love food!) is shopping down on Arthur Avenue in “Little Italy” in the Bronx. There are also some good restaurants! I sometimes feel like I stepped into a set on the Sopranos – lol.

    1. Oh man, that sounds awesome! I will have to make my way over there, the next time I’m in town!! I do love the Bronx Zoo too. Lucky you to live so close to NYC. I am obsessed with it. Have been going a few times a year for the last 25 years. It’s one of my many happy places. Thanks for the kind comments on the pics!

  12. Gorgeous shots, Pam! I’m especially taken with the perspective of those colored lights in the foreground. I’ve not made my way to NYC yet since I’m leery of crowded places. However, we have a train here that goes right into Grand Central Station and I do want to take that up at some point because I think it’s a place that must be seen at least once. 🙂

  19. Wow, I had no idea how stunningly beautiful New York city looks during the festive season! I would love to visit one day and go ice-skating and feast my eyes on Christmas extravaganza, among other things. Thanks for sharing, your joyful photos are just what I needed to see today! Aiva

    1. I’m soo glad Aiva! Yes, NYC is wonderful during the holidays. I wanted to get up to Central Park and take a pic of the ice skating rink, now I wish I would have done that for you! Have a wonderful Christmas and New year!

  20. Love the festive pics! I was born in NY, and wouldn’t you know, we had never actually got around to experiencing NYC during the Christmas season. Hoping to one day go back as a tourist and finally enjoy all that I somehow managed to miss out on when it was practically right there in my backyard 😛
